Range Balls Are Not a Discount Version of Your Ball

They are a different product with different behaviour, and the difference is not a flat percentage you can subtract at the end.

The question comes up in almost every session where a golfer has previously been fitted somewhere else: "does the ball really matter that much?" The answer is that it matters more than the shaft you are arguing about, and it matters unevenly across the bag, which is the part that causes trouble.

What Makes a Range Ball Different

Practice balls are built for durability and cost, not performance. Typically that means a firmer, more resilient cover — usually an ionomer blend rather than urethane — and a construction with fewer layers. Many are limited-flight by design, intentionally engineered to travel shorter so a practice facility can fit inside its own boundary.

The consequences show up in two places. Spin drops, particularly on lofted clubs where the cover has to grip the grooves. And the ball comes off the face less efficiently, giving up ball speed.

The Gap Grows With Loft

This is the important part. If range balls were simply "five percent shorter" across the board, you could correct for it mentally. They are not.

Off a driver, where spin is low and the cover barely engages, the difference is real but modest — often somewhere around five to eight percent of carry. Off a sand wedge on a partial shot, where the entire result depends on the cover gripping the grooves, the spin difference can be enormous, frequently several thousand rpm. A shot that would check and stop with your gamer ball releases twenty feet with a practice ball.

A driver tested on range balls is somewhat wrong. A wedge tested on range balls is wrong in a way that changes the recommendation.

How That Produces the Wrong Club

Follow the logic through for two cases.

Wedges. Test on a low-spin practice ball and every wedge looks like it releases too much. The natural fitting response is to add loft, or to choose a higher-spinning head, or to recommend a grind that helps you get under the ball. Take that club to the course with a urethane ball and it now spins more than you wanted, checks up short, and produces a completely different distance from a partial swing.

Drivers. Practice balls spin less. Less spin means a flatter, shorter flight on the monitor. The fitting response is to add loft to get the ball up. With your gamer ball, that extra loft plus the ball's own spin can push the flight too high and cost you the distance the change was meant to find.

In both cases the fitter did nothing wrong given the data. The data was about the wrong ball.

What About "Premium" Range Balls?

Some facilities stock a better grade of practice ball, and they are genuinely closer. They are still not your ball, and they are also inconsistent in a way a fresh sleeve is not — a range bucket contains balls that have been struck several thousand times each, and a scuffed, waterlogged ball behaves differently from a fresh one sitting next to it in the same bucket.

That variability is arguably worse than the offset itself. A consistent bias can be reasoned about. A random one just widens your dispersion for reasons that have nothing to do with your swing.

What We Do

Bring a sleeve of the ball you actually play and we will fit you on it. That is the whole recommendation. If you do not have one, we supply premium urethane balls from stock, and we note on the spec sheet which model was used so that any future comparison has the information it needs.

We do not fit on range balls, indoors or out. The outdoor landing area uses the same balls as the bays for the same reason.

If You Are Practising Rather Than Fitting

None of this means range balls are useless. For working on mechanics, tempo, or contact, they are completely fine and considerably cheaper. Just do not build a yardage chart from them, and do not draw equipment conclusions from a bucket.

The practical version: practise on whatever is in the bucket, but measure on the ball you play.
