The Twelve We Answer Weekly

Written the way we would answer them on the phone. If yours is not here, call the shop — we would rather talk you out of an unnecessary session than book one.

I am a 22 handicap. Am I good enough to be fitted?

Handicap is close to irrelevant to whether a fitting helps you. What matters is whether you make roughly the same swing twice in a row, and most 20-something handicaps do. The difference is what we fit for: a low handicap session tends to chase spin windows and shot shaping, while a mid or high handicap session usually finds bigger gains in lie angle, shaft weight, and getting the ball to launch high enough to hold a green. The second list is cheaper to fix and helps more.

How long does a session actually take?

A single-club session runs about ninety minutes, which includes warm-up, bay testing, and outdoor confirmation. A full bag assessment is scheduled as a three-hour block, often split across two visits if you would rather not hit two hundred balls in one afternoon. We do not double-book bays, so the time is yours.

Do I have to buy clubs at the end?

No. You pay for the session and you leave with the spec sheet regardless of what you do next. If you build with us the session fee comes off the invoice; if you take the sheet to another shop or order online, that is your call and we will not chase you about it. We would rather be the place people trust with a second opinion.

Why do you insist on going outside?

Because a mat lies about turf interaction and a simulated carry number is a model, not a measurement. Indoors we can compare two shafts fairly, which is genuinely valuable. But the ball never leaves the room, so the number on the screen is the software predicting where it would have gone using assumptions about the air. On the coast, in August, those assumptions drift. Ten minutes on real grass settles arguments the screen cannot.

What if the weather is bad on my appointment day?

The bays work in any weather, so we run the indoor portion as scheduled. If the outdoor confirmation is not possible, we hold the build order and you come back for a twenty-minute follow-up when it clears. There is no additional charge for that second visit. We would rather delay a build than ship one we have not verified.

Should I bring my own clubs?

Yes, and bring the ones you actually play, not the set in the garage you have been meaning to sell. Your current clubs are the baseline for the entire session. Without them we are comparing candidate options to nothing, and any improvement we report becomes a claim rather than a measurement. Bring your normal golf shoes too.

Which golf ball do you test with?

Whichever ball you play, if you bring a sleeve of it. Otherwise we supply premium urethane balls from stock. What we will not do is fit you with range balls, because they spin substantially less and fly shorter, and the gap is not a consistent percentage across clubs. Fitting a wedge on a range ball is a reliable way to end up with the wrong bounce.

How long does a build take once I order?

Wedges and putters are usually two to four business days because we stock most of what goes into them. Iron sets and drivers depend entirely on head and shaft availability from the manufacturer, which realistically means one to three weeks. Marisol gives you a date when the order is written and calls you if it moves.

Can you work on clubs I did not buy from you?

Yes. Loft and lie adjustment, regripping, shaft replacement, wedge sole regrinds, and length changes are all bench work we do regardless of where the club came from. Bring it in and we will quote it. The only thing we turn down is work on a head that is already cracked or has a compromised hosel, because it will not survive the process.

Are you tied to a particular brand?

No, and we have deliberately stayed that way. There is no manufacturer agreement in this building that obligates us to move a certain volume of anything. Our rack carries testers from eight or nine head brands and a much longer list of shafts, and the reason a particular head ends up on your spec sheet is that it measured better for you, not that we needed to clear it.

Do you fit juniors or left-handed golfers?

Both. Junior sessions run shorter, cost less, and focus almost entirely on length and shaft weight, since those are the two things that actually limit a growing player. Our left-handed tester stock is thinner than our right-handed stock — that is an industry supply problem, not a preference — so mention it when you book and we will pull additional demo heads in for your date.

Do you give lessons?

No. We fit and build clubs. If a session makes it obvious that a swing issue is the real constraint, we will say so plainly and point you toward instructors in the area, but we are not going to sell you equipment as a substitute for something a teacher should fix.

Still Unsure

Ask Before You Book

A five-minute phone call is often enough to determine whether a session is worth your money. There are golfers we tell to spend the fee on lessons instead, and golfers whose entire problem is a lie angle we can fix at the bench in twenty minutes.
