In Their Words

Collected from follow-up calls and emails after builds were collected. We have included the sessions that ended with us telling somebody to buy nothing, because those say more.

I came in convinced I needed a new 60-degree and left with the same loft, a different grind, and a wedge that no longer digs on the tight lies at my home course. It cost me less than the club I walked in planning to buy, which is not a sentence I expected to write.

The part that stuck with me was going outside. Two shafts looked identical on the screen indoors, and once we hit them into the breeze one of them fell out of the sky. I would never have known, and I would have bought the wrong one.

Curtis mapped my carries and showed me that my 5-iron and my hybrid were going the same distance while there was a thirty-five yard hole above them. I had been playing that bag for four years. Nobody had ever measured it.

Honest answer of the year: they measured my putter, cut an inch off it, changed the grip, and told me not to buy anything. Forty-five dollars. My three-putts have roughly halved since.

I drove over from Bluffton expecting a sales pitch and got a two-hour conversation about descent angle instead. Ended up with a slightly weaker loft than my old set and the ball actually stays on the green now in October.

Nadia talked me out of the 3-wood I came in for and into a 5-wood. I was annoyed at the time. It is now the club I hit most off the tee on the short par fours.

Terrance NunezFairway Wood Session · Garden City

My son is fourteen and growing an inch every six months. They fitted him for length and shaft weight, charged the junior rate, and told me plainly not to buy a full set until he stops growing. That is the kind of advice that earns the rest of my family's business.

Simone LedbetterJunior Session · Savannah

Rained out for the outdoor half, so they held the order and had me back the following Tuesday for twenty minutes. No charge, no argument, and the shaft that won indoors was not the one that won outside.

Hollis PembertonDriver Session · Tybee Island

Elton reground the sole on a wedge I have had for six years rather than selling me a replacement. Seventy-five dollars, three days, and it finally works on the winter turf out here.

Marcus FenwickWedge Regrind · Skidaway Island

Full bag session split across two Saturdays because I did not want to hit two hundred balls in one go. They wrote me a priority list so I could build it in stages instead of spending everything at once. Two years later I am on the last item.

A Note on These

Where They Came From

Every comment on this page came from a follow-up conversation after a build was collected, and each person agreed to have it published with their first name, surname, and the town they play out of. We have not edited them beyond trimming length.

We are aware that a page of five-star quotes is worth exactly what any such page is worth. The two that end with somebody being told to buy nothing are there because they are the sessions we are proudest of.
