The Shaft Terms, In Order of Importance
Deliberately ordered by how much each one actually changes your golf, which is close to the reverse of how often they get discussed.
1. Weight
Shaft weight has a larger effect on how you deliver the club than any other shaft specification, and it is the one most often left at whatever came in the box. Measured in grams, driver shafts commonly run from about 45 to 80, iron shafts from about 55 in graphite to 130 in steel.
A shaft that is too light for you encourages a quick, grabby transition and produces strikes scattered across the face. A shaft that is too heavy shortens the swing and drops your speed without giving back the control it promised. There is no correct weight in the abstract; there is a correct weight for how abruptly you change direction at the top.
If you change one thing about your equipment this year, this is the thing.
2. Bend Profile
Bend profile describes where along the shaft the bending happens: relatively more near the grip, in the middle, or near the head. It is often reduced to the phrase "kick point," which is a useful simplification and a slightly misleading one, since a shaft bends across its whole length rather than at a point.
Practically, a profile that is softer toward the tip helps the ball launch higher and spin a little more, while a stiffer tip section holds launch and spin down. Two shafts with the same printed flex can behave completely differently here, which is exactly why comparing flex letters between manufacturers is a waste of time.
3. Flex
Flex is the overall stiffness rating: L, A, R, S, X, or a manufacturer's own scale. There is no industry standard behind those letters. One brand's stiff measures like another brand's regular, and both can be true simultaneously because nobody agreed on a test.
Frequency measurement in cycles per minute is a more useful comparison and is what we actually use on the bench. When we tell you a shaft is "a soft S," that is a frequency reading, not an opinion.

4. Length
Length is a shaft specification even though it is rarely discussed as one. Shorter clubs are easier to strike in the centre of the face, and centre strikes preserve more ball speed than the small speed loss from the reduced length costs. Longer clubs raise potential and widen dispersion.
The reason stock lengths keep creeping up is that longer clubs post better numbers on a monitor in the hands of a good striker. On a golf course, with trees, the arithmetic is different.
5. Torque
Torque measures resistance to twisting along the shaft's axis, printed in degrees, typically between 2 and 6. Lower torque resists twisting more. It is widely oversold as a quality marker, when it functions mainly as a feel characteristic: low-torque shafts feel firm and boardy, higher-torque shafts feel livelier and smoother.
It matters most for high-speed players who genuinely need face stability, and least for the golfer being told that a lower number is automatically better.
6. Tipping
Tipping means trimming material from the tip end before installation, which stiffens the tip section and typically lowers launch and spin slightly. It is a fine adjustment rather than a transformation, and it is not reversible — once it is cut, it is cut.
We use it to fine-tune a shaft that is nearly right rather than to rescue one that is wrong. If a shaft needs two inches of tipping to behave, it was the wrong shaft.
Steel or Graphite in Irons
This is a weight decision far more than a material one. Modern iron graphite is not the flexible, imprecise thing it was twenty years ago, and there are graphite iron shafts that measure as stable as steel while weighing thirty grams less. The right question is not "should I play graphite" but "what weight class do I need," and then which material offers a good option at that weight.
How This Gets Used in a Session
We work down this list in order. Weight class first, then bend profile, then flex verified by frequency, then length. Torque and tipping are last, because they are refinements to a decision that has already been made correctly. Working in the reverse order — which is how equipment conversations usually go — produces a lot of discussion about numbers that barely move the golf ball.
