Putter Fitting

The club you use most and fit least. Most golfers can name their driver shaft and have no idea how long their putter is.

Length Is Usually Wrong

Retail putters are built at 34 or 35 inches because that is what fits on a rack, and a great many golfers need 33 or shorter. Too long forces the hands away from the body, lifts the toe off the ground, and turns a straight stroke into one that pushes almost everything.

We measure length against your actual posture, not against a chart. Then we check lie angle with the putter you brought, on a surface where you can see whether the sole is sitting flat, and the two together frequently account for a persistent miss the golfer has spent years trying to fix with technique.

Cutting an inch off the putter you already own is the cheapest stroke you will ever buy.

Loft, and Why the Ball Bounces

A putter has loft — usually three or four degrees — because the ball sits in a very slight depression on the green and needs lifting out of it. If your hands press forward at address you are removing that loft, driving the ball down into the surface, and producing a short hop before the roll begins. That hop is where distance control goes to die.

We record the launch condition on our roll surface and adjust static loft to compensate for what your hands actually do, rather than telling you to change what your hands do.

Head Style and Stroke Shape

Stroke arc is measured with a capture camera rather than guessed. A stroke with a pronounced arc generally pairs with a toe-hang blade, while a stroke that stays close to straight pairs with a face-balanced mallet. Getting this pairing wrong makes the putter fight the stroke on every attempt, which shows up as inconsistent start lines.

Hosel configuration — plumber's neck, slant, double bend, centre shaft — changes both toe hang and the visual at address, and we test the visual honestly. If a putter measures perfectly and you dislike looking at it, it is the wrong putter.

Grip Size Gets Underrated

Grip diameter and weight change how much the hands can rotate the face, and moving from a standard grip to an oversize one can meaningfully quieten a stroke that releases too aggressively. It is also the cheapest single change available, so we test it before we discuss new heads.

Green Speed Context

We roll on a surface calibrated to around ten on the stimp, which is roughly what most of the public courses around Savannah run in season. If you play somewhere consistently faster, tell us at booking and we will adjust the surface and the weighting recommendation accordingly.

Often the answer is an adjustment to the putter you already own, which costs less than the session did.
