Fairway Wood Fitting

Tested from the ground, because that is the shot that decides whether the club stays in the bag. Anyone can hit a 3-wood off a tee.

The Test Nobody Runs

Walk into most fitting bays and the fairway wood block gets hit off a low tee, because it produces better numbers and a happier customer. It also produces a club that fails at its actual job. The fairway wood exists to advance the ball a long way from a lie that is not perfect — slightly sitting down, slightly on a downslope, occasionally in the first cut.

Our fairway wood block is hit off turf outdoors. Every candidate gets ten shots from grass before it is allowed near a build ticket. Two clubs that look identical on a tee separate quickly once the sole has to interact with the ground.

What Sole Geometry Actually Does

Fairway wood soles vary far more than driver soles, and the differences matter. A flatter, wider sole resists digging and helps a golfer who catches the ground first. A more rounded sole with heel and toe relief lets a shallower player slide the club through without the leading edge grabbing. Rails and channels change how the club behaves out of rough more than they change anything off a clean lie.

None of that is legible from a spec sheet. It is legible from divots and from strike marks on the sole, which is why our outdoor block records both.

A fairway wood that only works from a perfect lie is a driving-range club.

Loft, and the 3-Wood Question

The traditional 15-degree 3-wood is a poor fit for a large number of golfers who play it out of obligation. If your driver carries 235 and your 3-wood carries 225 off the deck on a good day, those clubs are competing rather than complementing. A 16.5 or 18-degree head frequently produces a shorter, far more usable club that actually gets airborne from a real lie.

We test that directly rather than assuming the standard makeup. Several sessions a month end with a golfer replacing a 3-wood with a 5-wood and gaining a club they will actually use.

Shaft Weight and the Driver Relationship

Fairway wood shafts are typically ten to fifteen grams heavier than driver shafts, and that relationship is worth preserving. When it is off — usually because a golfer changed drivers and left the fairway wood alone — the two clubs start feeling like they belong to different players, and tempo suffers on whichever one is the outlier.

If you are fitting a driver and a fairway wood in the same season, doing them together is meaningfully better than doing them six months apart.
